Bhutan hosts global conference on adapting Vajrayana Buddhism to the digital age

Bhutan is hosting a grand international conference comprising 250 top international experts from 26 countries on adapting the timeless essence of Vajrayana Buddhism to address key concerns that humanity faces in the digital age.  On October 1, around 400 participants began brainstorming ways to identify and spread the great insights of Buddhism which people and nations can utilise to face the tumultuous developments of contemporary modernity.

Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Lyonchhen  Lotay Tshering inaugurated the conference in Thimpu, which is focusing on the theme  “Modernity of Buddhism”. The conclave is being co-hosted by the Centre for Bhutan and GNH Studies (CBS), the Central Monastic Body of Bhutan, and India based International Buddhist Confederation (IBC).


Dr. Dhammapiya, Secretary General of IBC is leading a 17-member delegation to the conference.

Specifically, participants are looking at a broad theme which includes essential practices for  a truly sustainable civilization, bridging ancient wisdom and modern psychology,  evolving forms of Vajrayāna Buddhism in the West and Women and yoginis in Buddhism and Buddhism in the digital age: possibilities of transmission and challenges of distraction.


The conference is also covering some themes such as Visual arts and paintings, the sociology and economy of Buddhism and Buddhist institutions as well as Art and architecture.
