India crosses major milestone by testing SMART submarine hunting Torpedo

India today successfully carried out a long-range Supersonic Missile Assisted Torpedo (SMART) off the coast of Balasore in Odisha. The advanced weapon which can be launched from the coast or warships an target submarines with precision over long distances

"The system has been designed to enhance anti-submarine warfare capability far beyond the conventional range of the torpedo and all the mission objectives…” the developer Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said in a statement.

This was the second successful test of the SMART torpedo. The first test was last year in October.

"SMART is a game-changer technology demonstration in the ASW." the DRDO had said after its first successful test.

SMART, when launched from a warship or a truck-based coastal battery, takes off like a regular supersonic missile. It covers most of its flight in the air at lower altitudes with two-way data link from the warship or an airborne submarine target detection system and provides the exact location of the hostile submarine to correct its flight path midway. According to the DRDO officials, when it approaches close enough to the submerged submarine, the missile will eject the torpedo system into the water and the autonomous torpedo will start moving towards its target to take out the submarine.

Torpedos are self-propelled weapons that travel underwater to hit a target and are limited by their range. DRDO undertook a project to build capacity to launch torpedoes assisted by missiles in the mid-2010.
