Video: Hot-air tourist balloon catches fire in the sky, 2 dead

Two people died and a child suffered severe burns after a hot-air balloon flying over the world-famous Teotihuacan archeological site near Mexico City caught fire, the regional government said on Saturday.

A video posted on social media shows the balloon’s gondola on fire, in a  clear sky.

“The passengers jumped from the balloon,” the government of the state of Mexico said in a statement.

It identified the victims as a 39-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man. The child suffered second-degree burns to the face as well as a fracture of the leg.

The statement did not say whether there were any other passengers on the balloon.

Tour operators offer balloon flights over Teotihuacan, around 70 km from Mexico City, for a $150 ticket.

With its Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, Teotihuacan is a popular tourist destination that dates back to the pre-Columbian period.
