Customs officials at Bengaluru airport seized 1.2 kg of gold valued at Rs 69.4 lakh, hidden in the footwear of a passenger who arrived on an IndiGo  flight from Bangkok.

On March 12, a passenger who arrived on IndiGo flight 6E 76, was intercepted by Customs Air Intelligence Officers on suspicion. The passenger said that he had come to India for medical treatment. However, he was unable to provide any valid medical documents.

The passenger was then thoroughly checked and four 24 carat gold bars were found concealed in special cavities of the slippers he was wearing after they were ripped open, a Customs official said on Wednesday.

The passenger has been arrested and investigations are on to unravel the wider smuggling network linked to the case.
