Gold worth Rs 2 crore seized from plane at Delhi airport

Customs officials recovered four gold bars worth Rs 2 crores at Delhi airport on Sunday from the toilet of a plane that was flying on international routes.

Officials acting on prior information rummaged the aircraft and recovered the gold in a pouch found affixed with adhesive tape below the sink in the toilet.  The puch contained four rectangular gold bars weighing around 3969 grams valued at Rs 1,95,72,400, said an official statement.

The gold recovered along with its packing material has been seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962 and further investigation is underway, it the statement added. Further investigation is on in the matter to unravel the smuggling network.

Gold smuggling is on the rise in the country due to the higher price of the precious metal in the country. Unscrupulous elements out to make a fast buck can buy gold easily abroad in places such as Dubai and then board the flight to India.
