Assam flood situation worsens, 11 lakh people hit

<p>
The flood situation in Assam has worsened with rising water levels in major rivers and incessant rain causing landslides in several places across the state.</p>

Four people have died and at least 11 lakh people across districts have been hit by the floods.</p>
<p>
The Brahmaputra and Gauranga rivers were flowing above the danger level in many areas, officials said.</p>
<p>
The flood waters have submerged as many as 1,510 villages completely destroying agricultural tural crops.</p>
<p>
The administrations of flood-affected districts have issued alerts, asking people not to go out of their homes unless it is absolutely essential such as in cases of medical emergency.</p>
<p>
Life in most parts of the state’s capital Guwahati has also come to a standstill due to flooding for the third day in a row. Several landslides have also been reported in the city. </p>
<p>
In Baksa district, a portion of a bridge collapsed in Subankhata area on Wednesday due to incessant rainfall and rise in water level of Dihing river.</p>
<p>
At least six trains have been cancelled, and four partially cancelled following waterlogging on the tracks between Nalbari and Ghograpar of the Rangiya division in Lower Assam, according to an official.</p>
<p>
Apart from Assam, extremely heavy rains have affected normal life in Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh also. At least five people have died in Meghalaya due to landslides, lightning and flash floods.</p>
<p>
National Highway 6 is closed for heavy traffic after parts of the highway caved in and was washed away. The highway is the lifeline of Tripura, southern Assam, Mizoram and parts of Meghalaya.</p>
