Andhra police destroys 2 lakh kg of ganja seized from narcotic smugglers

The Andhra Pradesh police destroyed two lakh kgs of ganja valued at over Rs 200 crore on Saturday by setting the seized narcotic on fire.</p>

Director General of Police Gautam Sawang said the ganja was seized from the coastal districts of the State in the last couple of years.</p>
<p>
He said that outlawed Maoists were encouraging ganja cultivation which was going on in 23 districts in Odisha and 11 mandals in the Visakhapatnam district.</p>
<p>
Sawang said as part of operation 'Parivarthan,' over 400 special police teams destroyed illegal ganja plantations in 313 villages in the 11 mandals. Several groups from various States have been involved in the cultivation of ganja and illegal transportation of the narcotic on the Andhra-Odisha border, he said.</p>
<p>
He disclosed that as many as 1,500 people have been arrested for the illegal cultivation of the plant and 577 cases have been filed in this regard. The police have also seized 314 vehicles involved in the ganja-smuggling.</p>
