Over 28 crore Indians have got at least one vaccine shot as drive speeds up

India’s cumulative vaccination coverage has exceeded 28 crores on Sunday with over 30 lakh doses being administered in the last 24 hours, the health ministry data released on Monday morning shows.

The momentum will accelerate further with the new phase of COVID-19 vaccination free of cost for all adults in the country starting today. The Union Government is committed to accelerating the pace and expanding the scope of COVID19 vaccination throughout the country.

Meanwhile, the number of fresh Covid-19 cases continued to decline 53,256 daily new cases in the last 24 hours, the lowest level registered in the last 88 days.

Less than 1 lakh daily new cases have been reported for 14 continuous days now. The country’s active case load now stands at a little over 7 lakhs.

India’s daily recoveries continue to outnumber the daily new cases of COVID-19 for 39 consecutive days now with 78,190 recoveries registered in the last 24 hours.

With substantially ramped up testing capacity across the country, a total of 13,88,699 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours in the country. Cumulatively, India has conducted over 39.24 crore tests so far.

The weekly positivity rate is currently at 3.32% while the daily positivity rate stands at 3.83% today. It has remained less than 5% for 14 consecutive days now. The World Health Organisation (WHO) considers a positivity rate below 5 per cent to be within the safe zone.

Many states have begun easing Covid-related lockdown norms as the devastating second Covid wave is receding. The Telangana government on Saturday announced reopening of all educational institutions from July 1 while UP has also allowed all markets and restaurants to open at 50 per cent capacity.

However, surging crowds at market places has emerged as an area of major concern over triggering a third wave. The Centre, however, has warned states to ensure the "extremely important" five-fold strategy of Covid-appropriate behaviour, test-track-treat and vaccination to prevent the spread of the disease. Vaccination against COVID-19, in the present scenario, is critical to break the chain of transmission, it said.
