Organ donation by foreign tourist’s family saves six lives in Bengaluru

Destiny plays a major role in the life of human beings, deciding where we live, go and even die. Yet, even in her death, a foreign tourist who passed while visiting Bengaluru has helped not one but six people through organ transplant.

Sharing this information Sparsh Hospital located in Bengaluru’s RR Nagar said the decision to donate the organs was taken by the family of the tourist whose identity has not been revealed for reasons of privacy.

She was in her 40s and died on May 15 due to brain haemorrhage. In a Press release issued by the hospital, it was stated that her liver and left kidney were successfully transplanted to patients at Sparsh hospital itself, while the other kidney was sent to Institute of Nephro Urology. Apart from this her heart valves were sent to Narayana Hrudayalaya, corneas to Narayana Nethralaya, and skin to Victoria Skin Bank.

Following the procedures and protocols of the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization — the government body overseeing cadaver organ donation in Karnataka – a written consent from the tourist’s family members was taken for donation.

The selection of the recipients was done as per the waiting list and the organs were transplanted.

Lauding the family’s decision, Joseph Pasangha, Group COO, Sparsh Hospital, said that donation of organs can change lives and has the potential of making a lasting impact on several persons. He added that it was remarkable to see how such selfless gestures transcend national boundaries or caste and creed.
