The surgeons in Hyderabad’s Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology after a difficult operation saved the life of a 53-year-old man. They were able to successfully remove a kidney tumour which was the size of a football and weighed 10 kilograms.
Incidentally, this happens to be the second successful surgery in the country and the first in this region.
The urologists who performed this successful procedure were led by Dr. Mallikarjuna C and included Dr. Rajesh K Reddy and Dr. Taif Bendigeri.
The patient who hails from Kadapa, a city in southern part of Andhra Pradesh came to AINU with abdominal edema or distended abdomen which is abnormally swollen outward.
The doctors on examining the patient found a large abdominal mass lesion and its imaging showed that a tumour was arising from the left kidney. This had taken up a considerable portion of the abdominal cavity forcing the intestines into the right lower quadrant.
Commenting on the case, Dr. Mallikarjuna said: “We decided against using a robotic method due to the magnitude of the tumour and went with open surgery. Following the surgery, we found the tumour to be enormous — it was the size of a football. The tumour was identified by microscopic analysis as a malignant development.”
Providing additional details, Dr. Reddy and Dr. Bendigeri added: “Our team removed the cancer-affected left kidney. The tumour was completely removed according to the clear surgical margins at the microscopic level. Fortunately, it was found that the patient did not need any additional therapy as the tumour had not spread to other organs. The patient has been warned not to disregard follow-up.”
