Daily count of fresh Covid cases in Mumbai surges to 6,347

<p>
Mumbai on Saturday reported another 6,347 fresh COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours which represents a 12 per cent rise over the surge recorded during the previous day.</p>
<p>
The daily count of fresh Covid cases in the country’s commercial capital has nearly doubled from the 3,671 cases reported on Thursday.</p>
<p>
One death linked to the coronavirus has been recorded in the past 24 hours, Mumbai's municipal corporation said.</p>
<p>
The authorities have clamped stringent restrictions on movement and gatherings in public places, including 5 pm – 5 am night curfews at beaches and parks to contain the spread.</p>
<p>
Mumbai Police has also banned large gatherings till January 15.</p>
<p>
Fearing a third wave of Covid cases, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reactivated its ward-level 'war rooms' to contain the spread as the fast-spreading Omicron variant has emerged as a major cause for concern. </p>
<p>
On Thursday Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray met with the state's Covid task force and one of points discussed was Omicron – the variant believed to be behind the surge in infections.</p>
<p>
The number of people infected Omicron variant has risen to 1,431 in India, with Maharashtra reporting the highest number at 454 cases. Delhi is next on the list with 351 infections followed by</p>
<p>
The Omicron variant has now spread to 23 states in India. Maharashtra is the worst-hit state with 454 cases, followed by Delhi with 351 infections. Tamil Nadu with 118 Omicron cases, Gujarat (115) and Kerala with 109 cases make up the remaining three in the top five list.</p>
