KVIC provides beehives to boost income of women and youth in Karnataka

One of the prime objectives of the Government is to make people residing in rural, remote and hilly areas, especially the women and youth, self-reliant and economically independent. To do so, the Khadi Village Industries Commission, provides them varied means and equipment and under this Manoj Kumar, the Commission Chairman, who is on a four-day visit to Karnataka distributed bee boxes and launched training for potters.

Bee boxes numbering 300 along with equipment and bee colonies were given under the Honey Mission to those trained in beekeeping. This is expected to help generate employment and also an additional source of income.

The Chairman making an interesting observation said the beehives have been placed on regular routes of elephants, so that it prevents human-animal conflicts and prevents casualties of both people and elephants. This so far has yielded very positive results.

The Commission also started a training programme for those engaged in potter’s work

Later Kumar inaugurated the Electric Potter’s Wheel training programme under Gramodyog Vikas Yojana at Malavalli for 40 trainees engaged in potter’s work to upgrade their skills.

Last financial year, KVIC had distributed 800 bee-boxes, equipment and bee colonies to 80 beekeepers, under the Honey Mission in Karnataka. Apart from this, 100 electric wheels to potters under Kumhar Sashaktikaran Yojana and 201 tool kits to trained tannery-artisans under the Leather Industry Programme were also provided.
