A 1955 Mercedes-Benz is now world’s most expensive car ever sold at Rs 1,100 crore

A 1955 vintage Mercedes-Benz sold for a record Rs. 1,100 crore ($143 million) at a secret auction held earlier this month, making it the world's most expensive car ever sold, auction company RM Sotheby's disclosed on Thursday.

"A 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé from 1955 has been sold at auction for a record price of EUR135,000,000 to a private collector," Sotheby's said in a statement.

The sale surpassed the previous record for the most expensive car sold by more than $95 million and more than doubled the corresponding record for a car sold privately ($70 million).

British car collector Simon Kidson is reported to have made the winning bid on behalf of an unnamed client.

Mercedes-Benz chairman Ola Kaellenius confirmed that the record sale was made at a secret auction on May 5 at the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart, Germany,

"We wanted, with one single act, to demonstrate the power of the Mercedes brand, Kaellenius remarked.

Mercedes refuses to disclose the name of the buyer.

The rare arrow-shaped coupe is one of only two of its kind ever made and was never owned privately until now.
