16 kg of gold smuggled through Myanmar border seized from trucks on Dimapur-Guwahati highway

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 15.93 kg of gold of foreign origin valued at Rs 8.38 crore that was smuggled into the country through the Myanmar border by an organised syndicate, according to an official statement.</p>
<p>
Acting on the basis of specific intelligence, officers of DRI mounted discreet surveillance on two oil tankers and a truck travelling separately from Mao in Manipur to Guwahati in Assam.</p>
<p>
In the early morning hours of 12th May, these vehicles were intercepted simultaneously at different points along the National Highway between Dimapur and Guwahati.  </p>
<p>
After a thorough search 96 gold bars weighing 15.93 kg concealed in different parts of the three vehicles were recovered. </p>
<p>
Five persons of the syndicate have been arrested and three vehicles were seized in the operation. Further investigations are in progress.</p>
<p>
In the financial year 2021-22, DRI has seized 833 kg of gold valued at Rs. 405 crore during its operations across the country. Of this 208 kg gold valued at Rs. 102.6 crore has been seized in the North-Eastern states and was smuggled into the country through the highly sensitive India-Myanmar and India-Bangladesh borders.</p>
