Violet Baruah is Assam’s first woman Inspector General of Police

Violet Baruah, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, became the first woman to be promoted as Inspector General in Assam Police. She will get this rank from January 1, 2022 onwards.

The promotion was officially announced through a Home Department of Assam Government notification. Incidentally, the 59-year-old Baruah, received the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service this year. In 2012 she had received the President’s Medal for Meritorious Service.

At present, she is Assam Police’s senior most woman IPS office and is currently posted as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (BTAD) in Kokrajhar district.

Baruah expressed her happiness at being promoted and said she was always ready to take on any challenge that comes with the job.

Talking to media she said: “I have never said no to any posting or task in my career. Rejecting a job has never been my style of functioning. That is why I was out of Guwahati (where state police headquarters is situated) for most of the period of my service.”

Having joined the police force in 1992 as an Assam Police Services officer, Baruah got nominated to IPS in 2004. She felt that even though gender empowerment is taking place everywhere, there is a need for “gender mainstreaming”.

“It requires personal initiative also. I personally opted for a field job and I did not face any barrier in that. Nowadays many women have come forward to join the police, but I feel more should come,” remarked Baruah.

The IPS officer has served as the superintendent of police in four districts, including Morigaon, Goalpara, Cachar and Barpeta. She has also worked in the CID wing of the Assam Police.
