Kerala’s wheelchair-bound model wants to walk in Paris Fashion Week

Confinement to a wheelchair has not dampened the enthusiasm of 23-year-old Nishan Nizar, a resident of Kannammoola, Kerala as he continues with his life in the usual way, chasing his dreams.

Life took an adverse dive when Nizar returning home on his motorcycle met with an accident a few years back and suffered multiple leg fractures and spinal cord injury. Following one year in the hospital, Nazir decided to go to the rehabilitation centre. Three months of rehabilitation and training, he started becoming self-sufficient.

Talking about the accident, Nazir told New Indian Express: “I look back at the incident as something that changed me in a positive way. I could learn about myself more, find out my potential that I wouldn’t have explored otherwise.”

Looking for more, Nazir is getting ready for the Mr & Ms Wheelchair India contest as the finalist from Kerala. Once Nazir started using the wheelchair, he became passionate about modelling. He has already done three fashion events and said he loves being a professional model.

“I used to do photoshoots before the accident, but never focused on modelling. One day, I chanced upon a modelling opportunity at a Bangalore based company. I sent my application and got in,” he recalled.

Aware of the problems of the specially-abled, he also works for their welfare. “There is no need for sympathy. We just need to be accepted and treated as equals. But first, one needs to accept oneself. I could and that has helped me connect with my own strengths. I want to create an inclusive world where we wouldn’t look at people with disabilities as a problem to be fixed or eliminated, but as a beautiful expression of humanity. I will work to help others recognise this.”

Sharing his other dreams with the media he said wants to participate in Paralympics in wheelchair badminton and also walk the ramps of Paris Fashion Week besides doing an animation course.
