Fearing Covid, mother in Gurugram locks herself with her child for 3 years

Fear of the Covid-19 pandemic has taken a toll on people in several ways including psychological. An instance of this came to light when police officials in Gurugram rescued Munmun Majhi, 33 who had locked herself along with her 10-year-old son in their house for the last three years.

She, as per a police official, was scared that her son would “die of Covid as soon as he stepped out”.

The two have been referred to the psychiatric ward of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak for treatment informed Dr. Virender Yadav, Gurgaon Civil Surgeon.

Police became aware of this case when Sujan Majhi, husband of the woman, informed them that his wife and son had been locked at home for three years and that he was not allowed inside after he went out to work after the lockdown restrictions were lifted.

Meanwhile, he continued to take care of the household expenses including the rent and groceries which he left outside the home. He stayed with his relatives and friends and then finally rented a separate house.

The house where a mother and son had locked themselves up was full of garbage and dirt

The cops initially found it shocking and then they contacted the woman who informed them that the boy and she were fine. She insisted that they will not step out because of Covid. The police continued pursuing and she finally visited the station where she was convinced. After she was taken to the hospital the police along with child welfare officials visited the flat.

They found garbage all over the apartment, piles of clothes, grocery packets and a lot of dirt. The boy with hair till his shoulder looked dazed on seeing so many people. He too was taken to the hospital.
