Delhi Police opens two more libraries for students

The Delhi Police keen on bridging the gap between people and the law enforcers has been making available library facilities for students and public. What makes these places different is that they are located in the police station premises itself.

This week two such libraries were inaugurated and these are located in PS Janakpuri-IGI Metro and PS Kashmiri Gate Metro.

The libraries were inaugurated by Dr. Ajit Kumar Singla, an Indian Police Service officer who is Joint Commissioner of Police, Transport Range. Addressing the gathering, Singla said: “There cannot be a better gift for the youth than educational support, through which they will definitely achieve their future goals. These libraries will help us to prepare better citizens for our country.”

The Delhi Police Public Library is a novel community policing initiative which was started on February 22 in 2012 as a pilot project at PS Jamia Nagar. It aims to bring society and police closer by providing educational support to the students and others who want to study and pursue a career.

At present 12 such libraries are functioning and they cater to more than 3.5 lakh beneficiaries. The entire project is managed by a non-governmental organisation, Shikhar.

Sharing details about the facilities available in these libraries with India Narrative, Nadeem Akhtar, Director of DPPL said: “They have many books of varied genres including competitive examination preparation books, newspapers and magazines to help students keep themselves abreast with current affairs, computers, high resolution television sets, barcode readers, etc. We have provided scanners, printers, and Internet facilities that help them to make notes and also get more information on subjects of their interest.”

That is not all as these libraries are fully air-conditioned and have suitable chairs and tables, to make reading and learning comfortable and have other amenities like washrooms etc.

Among the other dignitaries who were present on the occasion were Jitendermani Tripathi, IPS, DCP-Metro and Jaspal Singh, Business Head, Aadhar Housing Finance Ltd. and ACP Mohinder Singh.

Tripathi urged the students to visit the library on a regular basis and stressed that without hard work one cannot achieve anything.
