741-km-long Konkan Rly electrified – makes trip through the Western Ghats even more enchanting

The electrification of Konkan Railway 741-kilometre-long route will save more than Rs.150 crores in fuel expenditure

It was a proud moment for the nation and the railways as the Konkan Railway Corporation this week completed electrification of its entire 741-kilometre route between Roha in Maharashtra and Thokur in Karnataka. It will entail a saving of more than Rs.150 crores in fuel expenditure while making the whole journey pollution free.

The foundation stone for the electrification project of the entire route was laid in November 2015 and the cost of the entire project was Rs.1,287 crores.

The Commission of Railway Safety inspection of the route was done in six phases and it started from March 2020 with the inspection of the last section between Ratnagiri and Thivim conducted on March 24, 2022.

The project had to meet several challenges before being completed. These included difficult terrain and non-conducive atmosphere due to Covid-19 pandemic. The Konkan region receives a lot of rainfall during the monsoon and this required making special arrangements for electrification.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi while complimenting the Konkan Railway wrote in his tweet: "Congratulations to the entire Konkan Railway Team for the remarkable success of 'Mission 100 per cent Electrification' and setting new benchmarks of sustainable development."
