A woman died and two others were seriously injured in Chennai after a tree fell and crushed her car on Friday evening.

According to the police, the 55-year-old woman was accompanied by her sister and driver who were both seriously injured in the accident and have been hospitalised.

The deceased, identified as Vani Kabilan, was a branch manager of an Indian Overseas Bank branch.

Locals said that the ground near the tree has been dug for making a stormwater drain which appears to have loosened the soil around the tree.

However, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) said that no work related to the stormwater drain was done in the last two days. The work was stopped on June 22 and it was ten feet away from the tree.

Chennai Police have registered a case and an investigation has been launched into the tragic incident.
