Three killed in stampede at Rajasthan temple

The stampede took place at around 5 am in the morning at the entrance of the temple.

Three people were killed and two injured in a stampede at Khatu Shyam Ji temple at Sikar in Rajasthan on Monday morning.

The two injured persons have been shifted to a hospital in Jaipur for treatment.

The devotees had arrived on the 11th day of the lunar calendar, considered auspicious for darshan of Khatu Shyam Ji who is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Krishna.

According to the police, a large crowd had gathered outside the temple and people tried to rush in when the gates were opened. A woman reportedly fainted and fell, causing others to trip over and in the stampede that followed three women were trampled to death while two were seriously injured.

A team of police personnel immediately rushed to the temple to control the crowd and bring the situation under control.

Police SP of Sikar, Kunwar Rashtradeep, said the situation is under control and the crowd is being regulated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his condolences to the families of the victims.

"Saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede at the Khatu Shyamji Temple complex in Sikar, Rajasthan. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I pray that those who are injured recover at the earliest," the PM Modi tweeted.
