Punjab Health Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra has sparked an outrage by forcing a top official to lie down on a dirty bed in a government hospital as a punishment for not maintaining an adequate level of cleanliness in the wards.

Dr Raj Bahadur, the vice chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences in Faridkot, followed the Minister's humiliating orders while those around captured the incident on camera.

"It's all in your hands, it's all in your hands," the minister is heard telling the doctor after he gets up from the bed.

The minister took a round of the hospital accompanied by journalists and cameramen, in Faridkot to hear the complaints of patients.

While Dr Raj Bahadur got intimidated by the minister and followed his instructions on the spur of the moment, the next day he realised the public humiliation he had been put through and decided to resign from the job.

The minister's behaviour has come in for sharp criticism from the opposition parties.

"Cheap theatrics of Aam Aadmi Party never cease. Today the Vice Chancellor of Baba Farid Medical University, Raj Bahadur Singh was publicly humiliated by the Health minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra (+2 Pass). This type of mob behaviour will only demoralise our medical staff," tweeted Congress Party leader and former India hockey captain Pargat Singh.

The new health minister had been appointed recently, after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had sacked the earlier incumbent Vijay Singla from the cabinet for demanding money from contractors to clear their bills.
