UP Polls: BJP campaign to focus on infrastructure development social welfare schemes

All eyes set on UP polls: BJP to bet on infrastructure development

As the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh inch closer, the BJP is likely to sharpen its pitch on issues relating to economic and infrastructure development in the state amid rising inflation which is coming as a “big challenge”. In November Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation of the Noida International Airport in Jewar. Apart from that, Modi also inaugurated the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and a fertilizer plant in Gorakhpur last month. Sources said that ahead of the elections, the Yogi Adityanath government is keen to showcase Noida as the next financial hub of the country.

“The focus for BJP will be on the development agenda and economic growth. No one can deny that infrastructure and connectivity in the state have improved like never before,” an insider told India Narrative.

The Kashi Vishwanath Dham Project, Kanpur Metro, Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, Bundelkhand Expressway, and Ganga Expressway are among the other key projects undertaken by the UP government.

Another analyst, who is not authorized to speak to the media, added that the state has undertaken significant reform measures to woo investors. “Following the good principles of good governance, the state has drastically improved its image as a policy oriented investment destination while gaining investors’ confidence,” a Times of India report said. The state has attracted investments of over Rs 3 lakh crore in the last five years. The “massive infra push” has also led to employment generation in the state, which was never featured in the list of states with conducive investment climate.

But beyond that, analysts on the ground said that the social welfare schemes have worked “quite well.” “A big plus for the BJP is the social welfare schemes. These schemes are well monitored and the benefits are reaching the poor, people consider that to be a big plus,” political analyst Sajjan Kumar told India Narrative.  Kumar added that people are also by and large satisfied with governance.

However, political analysts who are currently in UP, pointed out added that “there is also rising disgruntlement among the people and the Samajwadi Party would make substantial gains as the Muslim votes would go to Akhilesh Yadav and his team.
