Jeevasarthakathe, the Government body which oversees cadaver organ donation in Karnataka

Serving people even after death is what a 51-year-old man from Karnataka – Umesh B. Dandagi — did as the organs donated by him saved the lives of six people. He had suffered grievous head injury due an accidental fall on March 8,

Dandagi was operated upon at the KLES Hospital in Belagavi where he underwent craniotomy or the removal surgically of part of the bone from the skull to expose the brain for surgery. While the doctors tried their level best, they were unable to save him and on March 16 he was declared brain dead.

The officials of the Jeevasarthakathe, the Government body which oversees cadaver organ donation in Karnataka — initiated the procedure and process of organ donation. They took a written consent from the members of Dandagi’s family.

Following this the organs were harvested and its recipients were decided according to the waiting list.

The heart of the braindead man was transplanted into a patient at KLES Hospital while the kidneys were sent through the green corridor to SDM Hospital in Dharwad and Tatwadarsha Hospital in Hubballi. The corneas and skin were donated to the KLE eye bank and skin bank.

For transplanting the liver, it was airlifted within hours from Belagavi Airport to Bengaluru. Ensuring that no time was lost in transportation, the Bengaluru Traffic Police created a green corridor from Kempegowda International Airport to Sparsh Hospital, RR Nagar, where the liver transplantation was successfully done to a patient.

The request for the green corridor was made by the Sparsh Hospital for smooth passage of the liver, informed the Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Bengaluru City, BR Ravikanthe Gowda.
