Kolkata to get India’s first underwater metro in 2023

Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation’s East-West corridor project will have the singular distinction of being India’s first underwater metro service. The KMRC announced that the project is likely to be completed by June 2023.

This route will connect Salt Lake to Howrah via Kolkata with a stretch below the Hooghly river. At present, this metro is operational between Sector V and Sealdah stations.

The KMRC statement said: "Target for commissioning of the balance section from Sealdah to Howrah Maidan is June 2023.”

The project which overcame several obstacles, once completed, will bring huge relief to lakhs of commuters as it will connect the busy Howrah and Sealdah railway stations as well as the North-South Line of the Kolkata Metro at Esplanade.
