Kerala’s popular national and international tourist destination, the Kovalam beach is all set to go for a makeover. The State’s Tourism Department is all set to rebrand and relaunch it as a prime tourism hub along with other beaches.

Among the attractions planned at Kovalam is the construction of the first-of-its-kind cable-stayed glass bridge connecting the Light House beach and IB beach. Sharing details with the media, the officials said the bridge will perch above the ocean and will be used by the visitors as a walkway to reach IB beach from the Light House beach as at present these two are not directly connected.

An interconnecting bridge between two rocks at Edakallu in Kovalam is planned while a boat jetty is also on the anvil at Edakallu to facilitate water sports.

Other plans on the cards include development of infrastructure at the Light House, Adimalathura and Hawa beaches, Anantha Park renovation at Hawa beach, building a diaphragm wall, a sewage treatment plant, and a toilet block.

Apart from this a sum of Rs.4 crore has been set aside for constructing an administrative block and more facilities for the visitors, including a first aid room, a CCTV room, rest room, an amenity centre, and a children’s play area.

While the Tourism Department will develop Kovalam and the adjacent beaches with support of the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board at a cost of Rs.93 crore, the whole project will be executed in a single phase through a comprehensive plan.
