India cricket captain Rohit Sharma down with COVID-19 in England ahead of Test match on July 1

Team India Captain Rohit Sharma has tested positive for COVID-19

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has tested positive for COVID-19 in England, just ahead of the Test match scheduled for July 1.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the announcement in a press statement and also posted the information on its Twitter handle: "#TeamIndia Captain Mr Rohit Sharma has tested positive for COVID-19 following a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday. He is currently in isolation at the team hotel and is under the care of the BCCI Medical Team."

Rohit Sharma was playing in the 4-day tour game with Leicestershire as part of the warm-up for the Test match against England. He batted in the first innings on Thursday to score 25 runs, but didn't come out to bat in India's second innings on Saturday.

It remains to be seen whether he will be declared fit for the Test match in Edgbaston.

The Virat Kohli-led Indian team had taken a 2-1 lead against England last year but the fifth and final test was called off due to the outbreak of Covid in the Indian camp. The BCCI and ECB decided to rearrange the remaining Test match this year which is scheduled for July 1.

India will also play three T20Is and three ODIs on the tour apart from the Test match.
